Public House & Restaurant – The Blue Boar

Large and long red bricked building with large flat straight tiled roof and one chimney with a car park in front and the church just visible on the right. A number of signs are on and leaning against the building the main sign being the pub’s dark read sign saying “Blue Boar Inn”.

Free standing pub sign. Above a large circle “FREE HOUSE” and below “BLUE BOAR”. In the circle is the head and shoulders of a strange looking blue boar who has bright red tusks – a slightly fantastical style of drawing.

This Public House was first recorded as brewing and selling ale until 1360 and the first mention of its medieval name of Bays was when John and Alice Bray surrendered 1/2 an acre of land to a John Redwood and his wife Joan. In 1817 it was recorded as being a public house named the ‘Boat’.

Much more detail will be found on the Historic Trail page and in the Quarterly Review number 29.

During the 1990’s the Blue Boar had various problems mainly due to a lack of customers but once Alan Ankin and his partner Angie took over and they had proceeded to organise a series of regular entertainment they completely revitalised the pub. Over the last few years they have further extended their facilities with the introduction of cooked meals. The Blue Boar is a Free House.
