Walsham le Willows

Walsham le Willows Willow Club

Walsham le Willows over 60’s Club was formed in 1957 so it celebrate it’s fiftieth birthday in 2007.

The club known as the Willow Club was founded by the late Mrs. Hilary Russell the wife of our local Doctor, who was Chairman foir thirty years. In 1987 the present committee took over the running of the club which always had the support and help of Mrs. Russell before her death. Dr. Russell still shows great interest in the club and visits the fortnightly meetings when able.

The Willow Club meets every fortnight on Tuesday afternoons in the community room of Millers Close. Members meet friends for a chat, play cards, bingo and have afternoon tea. A raffle or ‘bring & buy’ takes place every other meeting and the proceeds from these events go towards the club funds. Each member pays 60p subscription at the meeting and this money also goes toward the club funds. Activities and outings are always discussed with club members at the meetings. During the year we have numerous events and each member is given a diary of these events at the beginning of the year so that they are always aware of things that are happening. Christmas lunch is held in the Priory Room on a Saturday before Christmas and the New Year Party is also held there. During April or May a Mystery Coach Tour is arranged and afternoon tea is organised at a hotel or restaurant. The all day summer outing is usually a visit to the seaside and recently we have enjoyed a visit to a large garden centre before Christmas to enable members to start their Christmas shopping. We celebrate the club’s birthday party in November with a birthday cake and we also hold the Annual General Meeting in November.

Unfortunately we have lost many of our older members during the last few years and therefore numbers have dwindled. However, we have also welcomed new younger members recently and our hopes are that the club will continue to thrive for many years to come.
